Painted Door Mat DIY

Updated: Aug 7, 2019

I have wanted to try and design my own front door mat for a while now so when Terrie with Decorate and More with Tip presented me with the opportunity to join a DIY blog hop I accepted! In my typical fashion I dove in without much planning. Bad idea. So here I have my DIY fail and then my DIY success... Also, don't forget to scroll to the bottom where I have a list of other DIY mats by other talented bloggers!

DIY Fail:

A couple months ago I had purchased a plain mat at Ikea. I thought instead of buying a new one I could make this one work (don't do this). I shook it off and even vacuumed it before going to Hobby Lobby to buy outdoor paint, a stencil and sponge applicators. When I got home I opened my supplies and got to work. I quickly realized this was not going to turn out well. My stencil had very thin lines and the sponge wasn't working great at applying the paint. I found a paint brush and tried again. Still not working I decided to ditch the stencil and free style it. This worked a little better but I wasn't satisfied with my finished product. Ultimately I think a brand new mat would be a better surface to work on.

DIY Success:

With my lesson learned I went to Ikea and bought the same mat but brand new. I also didn't want to try and fail again with my stencil painting process. Instead I went to Target and bought permanent paint pens. With a little planning I looked at some DIY mats on Pinterest for some inspiration and decided to go with the saying "hello sunshine". I probably should have practiced my letting before going at it but clearly I'm not good at planning! However I do think it turned out really cute. It was also very easy with the paint pens!

*I placed my "hello sunshine" mat at our front door and my stencil/free hand one at our backdoor. Both have held up to multiple rain and thunderstorms!
