I don't know about you but we travel a lot during the holidays. We go to Colorado every year for Thanksgiving and then head out to western Kansas the day after Christmas. An iPad and some snacks can do a pretty good job at keeping my kids busy but 6-9 hours of screen time and sugar is not a good mix. So I have gathered a list of my favorite electronic free activities and healthy snacks.
Want some quiet time in the car? Pass out some brain teaser puzzles, Where's Waldo books or some other book of hidden pictures. And remember fidget spinners? My kids seem to have forgotten about them but when I pull them out of my glove box they're all of a sudden cool again.
Have you ever played Would You Rather? It's a really good game for a long road trip. Age appropriate trivia games or Travel Blurt (ages 10+) can be fun too and help pass the time. This Scavenger Hunt card game looks perfect to help pass the time!
When it come to packing snacks my kids love a sweet treat and I don't mind letting them pick out a Gatorade or some cookies but I try to even it out with some healthier options. Protein is good and jerky is one of my kids favorites! It's kind of pricey when your buying enough for 3 boys so it's special for them when I buy it for our long drives. I also pack whatever fruit we have on hand at the time like cuties, bananas, apples... Just be sure to have a trash bag for any peels! I also pack a few RXbars or KIND bars. If you have room for a small cooler you could avoid all food stops by packing premade sandwiches, wraps or salads. Trader Joe's is my favorite place to pick those up.
Let me know if you try any of these out or if you have any other tried and true road trip activities or snacks. I'm always looking for new ideas!
